What Legacy Will You Leave Behind?
A Recap of Entrusted: Designing a Legacy That Matters
A Luncheon with David R. York
David York enriched our minds and inspired our hearts, sharing with us his wisdom about legacy planning. Vicky Mixson, HOCF Chair of Donor Relations, says, “Loved hearing from David York. Great presentation and good thoughts about the comprehensive view of legacy.”
As Christ-followers, we’re exhorted to live a life of faith, hope, and love. That’s where our legacy starts. But what about when we’re no longer here? And what can we do now to orient the resources God has blessed us with to continue to reflect the faith, hope, and love of Jesus Christ? In the present, and in the future?
A few weeks ago, David R. York blessed us with a wonderful talk about what it means and what it takes to leave a legacy that lasts, one that ultimately glorifies God. Leaving a legacy As an attorney, CPA, and managing partner with the Salt Lake City law firm of York Howell—with extensive experience in planned giving—he had many nuggets of wisdom to share with us. And we were delighted to see so many of our friends there to receive them!
Covenant Partner Kimberly Vis’s greatest takeaway was “Wealth is not a right but a responsibility.” She says, “Truly enjoyed David York. Very knowledgeable and well-spoken presenter.”
Julie Jones shares, “[His presentation] was informative, precise, covered a lot of content in 1 hour and gave us many things to consider as we think of our future and legacy.”
We had a few people come up to us afterwards, asking what practical steps they can take going forward. So here’s what you can do now:
Articulate your values and passions. Consider this message from Entrusted by David York: “Legacy isn’t what you leave to someone, but what you leave in someone.” What areas of need has God placed upon your heart? What matters most to you? What legacy do you want to leave behind?
Align your wealth with your values and passions. Review your giving, investments, and estate planning. Consider designating a percentage of your estate to charitable organizations you love, like the Heart of the City Foundation. Do your financial decisions reflect the legacy you want to leave behind?
Engage the next generation in generosity. Invite children and grandchildren to join you in making giving decisions. As David York says in Entrusted, “Stewardship is taught, not inherited.” Share with them why you’re making the choices you’re making, how you make them, and ensure the next generation is equipped to enjoy their wealth through values-based generosity.
We’re grateful to know there are so many others who are passionate about leaving a legacy that matters—eternally. Thank you to everyone who made this such a lovely event! We can’t wait for the next one. Stay tuned.
